Dear Readers,

It is a pleasure to present to you the first issue of the Counsel.

In recent years there has been a proliferation of magazines, journals and periodicals in Pakistan. We have publications on politics, current affairs, business, sports, interiors, information technology, fashion, cuisine, travel, shipping and dental health.

Despite the legal community of Pakistan having had the distinction of being featured concurrently on the front covers of Time magazine and Newseek in 2008, there has been a vacuum in the dedicated and consistent coverage of legal developments in Pakistan.

The Counsel is Pakistan's premiere corporate law magazine reporting on matters that interest and impact legal practitioners, the judiciary, corporations, business owners, governmental and non-governmental institutions, and other professionals involved in the corporate sector. As a quarterly publication, it will seek to update you on legislative and judicial developments as they evolve in Pakistan, regionally and internationally. The Counsel will publish both academic and vocationally oriented materials by legal practitioners, judges, academics and corporate leaders, including company secretaries and chief financial officers. In addition to publishing opinions and articles, the Counsel will have, as its regular feature, interviews and discussions with eminent members of the judiciary and leading legal practitioners and corporate leaders thereby creating a forum for debate on legal trends and policies.

One of the core undertakings of the Counsel will be to highlight legislative, regulatory and judicial developments in areas of corporate law, including Company Law, Banking and Finance, Capital Markets, Mergers and Acquisitions, Regulation, Insurance, Tax, Privatization, Pharmaceutical, Project Finance, Construction and Real Estate, Shipping and Aviation, Intellectual Property, Energy and Natural Resources, Telecommunication and Information Technology, Employment and Labour as well as Litigation and Alternate Dispute Resolution.

We hope that the Counsel will add value to the high standard of skills required of legal and other professionals in the corporate sector responsible to their clients and organizations. It will be a timely, educational and at times an entertaining insight into the practice and application of the Law in its various facets.

We hope you find the following pages to be interesting, informative and entertaining!

To your success,

The Editors.
